Setting up

Hands-Free Lighting

7 min read

Being able to turn lights on and off without reaching a switch makes a home feel usable again. None of this needs an electrician — most of it is a lamp, a smart bulb, and an afternoon.

How to set it up

1

Start with one smart bulb

Screw a smart bulb into the lamp used most — bedside or living room. It works with the existing switch left permanently on, and connects to a voice assistant or an app.

2

Add a voice assistant nearby

A smart speaker within talking distance of the bed or chair lets lights turn on and off by voice — useful even before reaching for a switch becomes hard.

3

Cover lamps without smart bulbs

A smart plug turns any ordinary lamp into a voice- or app-controlled one — no rewiring, and it unplugs and travels if the lamp moves rooms.

4

Add motion sensors for hallways

A battery motion sensor on hallway or bathroom lights means they're never off when needed and never left to hunt for a switch in the dark.

What I'd tell myself earlier

Keep the physical switch reachable and left on — hands-free is a backup on a bad day, not a replacement for a working switch on a good one.
